General Knowledge

1.0    UNDERSTANDING ON SUBJECT
           
            Learning Design Principles and Application is compulsory in the way to complete the course of Architectural or Construction. Subject is very important and really relate to other subject learned in many ways and view.
            Major head lines such as Planning design and production phase, material selection, systems and equipment and environmental impact, roles, responsibilities and obligation and affection of advance technologies on design is the key that has to be delivered to the student in terms of understanding the whole concept of Design Principles.

            Why do I have to learn and understand this subject?
           
            As I mention before, in the long way to become good architect or project manager in the future, I must have the capabilities to handling all situation in architectural or construction world in many angles including politic, social, and economy factors. The failure of tackling this subject will lead to the disaster developing in all stages not only now as a student but even when we out as a worker.
            Design principles and application programming is the research and decision-making process that define the problem to be solved by rational stages.

1.1       LECTURE PRESENTATION
The performing style by the lecture is very useful, easy to understand, uncomplicated and clear in terms of voice tone, paper delivered and explanation.

Every time in the middle of the class, lecture will tried to relate current issue in conjunction to make student more understand and mixture of fantasy and reality also give positive impact to the student generally and me specially.

            Good lecture will put some joke in learning session to make student catch up and interested in their subject.

1.2       LECTURE NOTES
One of the methods of lecture performance is giving notes, but the application is slightly different. As a student, I perfectly understand each classes session, planning on forcing student writing on each notes is more practically instead of giving photostat notes, reading and writing in the same time will give good impact on remembering all the important fact. Beside that all notes given is very clear and very easy to memories and understand.

2.0    UNDERSTANDING ON ASSIGNMENT
           
Assignment given is the challenge to the student to discover, investigate, analyze, research and gets the top level in solving the whole situation and problems. Student must have the abilities on how tackling few stages such as: -

a)            Planning design and production phases
Ø  Planning and design of a project        -           the client brief, aesthetics of the project and the processes, influence of shape, size and proportion, position, location and structural considerations of a building, an engineering project or a plant system, content of the project.
Ø  Land use: effect of green/brown and reclaimed land project,
Ø  Health, safety and welfare: issues in design, maintenance and demolition,
Ø  Financial considerations: financial implications and source of funding, financial planning including the cost of building, the cost of commissioning, cost in use, life cycle costing, cost modeling and facilities managements.
Ø  Planning and control considerations: legal restraints. Town and country planning, building regulations and European legislation.
Ø  Design consideration: designing for planned use, designing for exclusivity, for change of use, for versatility, designing for disability, relevant legislation and acts of parliament.

b)            Materials selection, systems and equipment, and environmental impacts
Ø  Environmental planning, material of form, construction material, new or recycled materials.
Ø  Energy efficiencies: production and processing of the materials.
Ø  Services required: in and out of the project, availability of services to a building or project and services used by a building or project.

c)            Roles, responsibilities and obligation
Ø  Consultant team – preparing the design and getting approval on the earlier stage.
Ø  Construction team – preparing construction drawing cooperates with engineers and gets the approval on their zone.
Ø  Approval team – authorities who has the power to give approval.

2.1    IMPORTANCE OF THE ASSIGNMENT
           
The main reason on making this assignment important is, missing one stage will give a lot of problem for the next stage or even you won’t be able to continue of finishing up, lecture always giving advice that we have to follow the procedure wisely for better ending in terms of saving cost and time spending and it s matter not only if you are still student but when you become a worker.
The quality of the work also will be improved and most important the quality of the result will be in the best level.
On doing this assignment, student also will learned the cooperation between persons involve in all levels and connection between stages. This thing we practically doing it on finishing this assignment.

2.2    EFFECT OF THE ASSIGNMENT ON CURRENT AND IN THE FUTURE.
           
The main effect for me on doing this assignment is the sense of cooperation is very important, smooth communication also should be taken seriously. Taking the case study also give me good thought on gaining my knowledge on how to dealing with each person involve nicely not only now but can be implicated when I become worker on day.
Personally there are less different between study and work, if we learn correctly what ever lecture thought it could be use practically to the real world in the future.

3.0    UNDERSTANDING ON CASE STUDY
           
PROPOSED MIXED CONSTRUCTION OF 16 LEVEL INCLUDING 560 SHOP/ OFFICE UNITS, 567 CARPARK UNITS AND 397 APARTMENT UNITSON LOT 4086, PHASE 3B(i) ATJALAN KEPONG, MUKIM BATU, KUALA LUMPUR.

3.1       PLANNING PHASE

Accordingly to the case study, after long research and investigation, there’s a lot of peoples involved in planning phase and were monitored by developer chosen and were monitored by project manager. Besides that owner also monitored to make sure the beginning of the project running smoothly.
·                     The preliminary investigation contain finding the right site, analyze the site condition, soil condition, zoning, facilities, traffic flow, wind and air circulation and sun orientation and owner also particular in terms of feng sui and stuff like that.
·                     The choosing of participant has to be done in this phase as well, but should be after the developer getting the approval for the right authorities.
·                     The financial planning including budgeting, the owner, the loaner and the banker.
·                     The work program, procedure and progress was planned nicely from the beginning to the end of the project

3.2       DESIGN PHASE

Refer to the case study; on these phase consultant appointed by the owner and developer was giving big impact on design the main building. The team that represent consultant is architect, engineer, building and quantity surveyor and landscaping.
·                     Architect is directly making connection with the owner. For this development, owner has come up with their requirement including concept and image but will be process by the consultant.
·                     To make the project more efficiency, owner and consultant did doing meeting every month to make sure that the selection of material and equipment is up to the standard level.
·                     For this massive project, cooperation all parties are great. Integration between services, safety, UBBL , Bomba requirement and design overall is very efficiencies and giving good impact on value of the properties.
·                     Every each of the progress at this stage has to get approval from local authorities.

3.3       PRODUCTION PHASE

For the final phase. Developer has list down few planning for all parties involved to follow up. Form the preliminary, substructure works, super structure work, building works, eternal and internal works and other related works.
In conjunction to make sure that all progress running accordingly to the planned, consultant and contractor has created few checking forms before starting the progress, middle and towards ending.
Man and equipments are being use everyday, so to maintain the quality and quantity, they monitor it using form called checklist.
All the project documentation at this stage also has been done.

4.0       POSITIVE COMMENT

There are many positive sides on doing everything, starting from subject, assignment and case study. List below is the listed that I carried out as a reference for us and can be practices when ever we in the real world later.

·                     Knowledge gained -           while before this, I never thought that we have to be careful on doing the first stage such as site analysis. Not taking serious on first stage will lead to collapse.
·                     Understanding         -           the whole concept of teaching is very useful and can be Applicant in the real world.
·                     Observation              -          by practices all the knowledge, all the procedure can run smoothly, parallel and systematic.     

5.0       CONCLUSION

Subject is quite tough compare to the other subject due to the importancy, the potency of the subject to be practices in the real world is wide open and relate to architectural and construction sector. I do believe also that learning and understanding design principal can give huge effect on economy, politic and social.
